Projects
Health and Climate Change
Strengthening climate literacy of the Czech health sector
About the project
The climate crisis and the associated consequences of biodiversity loss and environmental pollution are increasingly being seen as the greatest threats to human health and health systems in the 21st century. The health-environment nexus is still only marginally represented in health professional education. The Health and Climate Change Project (full title: Klimatické vzdělávání pro zdravotníky a osvěta ohledně vlivu klimatické změny na zdraví; 2023–2025), coordinated by the Czech Climate Coalition, therefore aims to develop, pilot test and disseminate an educational module for medical professionals on climate change and in particular its implications for health and health systems.
The pilot validation of the educational module will take place at the Third Faculty of Medicine, Charles University in the form of an elective course. The module will be followed by an e-learning course designed primarily for general practitioners in the Czech Republic and individual interested health professionals.
The project is guaranteed by Dr. Marie Bourne, Dr. Anna Kšírová and Dr. Klára Matoušková.

Main topics
Climate change, its causes and impacts on health
The burning of the fossil fuels
Transportation, urbanism
Heatwaves
Mental health
The impacts of biodiversity loss on the health of the individual and populations
Impacts of the climate change and specific anthropogenic activities on biodiversity
Foods production
Antibiotic resistance
Zoogenous infection
Autoimmunity
The human microbiome
The impact of pollution on human health
trends in the production of plastics as fossil products
pollution by microplastics and nanoplastics and toxic substances bound to plastics
endocrine and metabolic disruptors
effects on brain development and behaviour, reproductive, metabolic and immune health
Target group
The primary target group consists of medical students and health professionals. In addition to education, we emphasize medical practice and prevention opportunities at the individual as well as institutional level. Our goal is to increase the climate and environmental literacy of the Czech health sector. We are also planning media coverage of the topic and education for the wider public.

Marie studied medicine in Yorkshire, UK. She then spent two years doing her residency training in northern Scotland, a year studying gerontology and longevity in the Netherlands and 4 years of specialty training in general practice in England. Since September 2020, she has been working as a GP in Prague and is involved in teaching in the division of General Practice at the Third Faculty of Medicine, Charles University. She also works in the Salvation Army general practice.
At the Third Faculty of Medicine, she is involved in the preparation and lecturing of the course The Impact of the Ecological Crisis on Human Health, in which she focuses on zoonoses (diseases or infections that are naturally transmissible between animals and humans) and co-lecturers the topic of mental health in relation to the climate crisis.

MUDr. Anna Kšírová
Anna graduated from the Second Faculty of Medicine, Charles University, during and after her studies she completed several long-term stays abroad (India, Norway, South Africa).
MUDr. Anna Kšírová
Anna graduated from the Second Faculty of Medicine, Charles University, during and after her studies she completed several long-term stays abroad (India, Norway, South Africa). She works as an anaesthesiologist in a hospital in Jablonec nad Nisou. In the past she also worked in neurointensive care.
She is a co-founder of the Parents for Climate Liberec and Doctors for Future Czech Republic, with whom she is trying to improve awareness of the health impacts of the climate and environmental crisis.
At the Third Faculty of Medicine, Charles University, she is involved in the preparation and lecturing of the course The Impact of the ecological crisis on human health, in which she specializes in heat waves, fossil fuel consumption, urban planning and the impact of health care on the environment.

MUDr. Klára Matoušková, MPH, Ph.D.

MUDr. Klára Matoušková, MPH, Ph.D.
Klára holds a medical degree (MUDr) from the Third Faculty of Medicine, Charles University in Prague and earned her PhD at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst. She also completed a Master of Public Health (MPH) degree in the United Kingdom. Her research has focused on endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDCs), and she has led several iterations of the Controversies in Environmental Health course, while she also supervised undergraduate students in laboratory work.
Currently, Klara collaborates on an innovative series of interactive educational lectures designed for medical professionals, highlighting the many intricate interfaces between environmental sciences and human health. Furthermore, she contributed to the development and delivery of a novel course at the Third Faculty of Medicine, Charles University, titled The impact of climate and ecological crises on human health. This course features in-depth, discussion-based modules, with the topics reflecting Klara´s expertise including the effects of microplastics and anthropogenic chemicals that disrupt the endocrine system, metabolism and immune functioning in the human body.
